A studio for ideas, before they know what they are.
Some become buildings, from a study on paper to a house someone lives in. Some become music. Some become tools. All of them start the same way: by noticing something and giving it room.
Miller Art Studio is the practice of architect Lucas Miller. It treats each architectural project as a unique work, with a title, a date and a number, and extends the same attention to music, installations and the tools that make them possible.
The method is simple: listen first, play seriously, build with precision. Exploration, error and discovery stay human; production is entrusted to the machine, to protect the time to think.
The studio is in an old industrial building in Poblenou, Barcelona. The door opens to architects, musicians and makers of tools, to talk, test and build. The pieces go wherever the place and the person are.
“The empty is exceedingly powerful. I would say not ex nihilo nihil fit, out of nothing comes nothing, but I would say you can’t have something without nothing. …
Now, we tend to think of space as nothing. The space between the earth and the moon, and the earth and the sun, is considered, especially since the Michelson–Morley experiment, which proved there was no ether, to be just nothing at all. But to suggest how very powerful and important this nothing at all is, let me point out to you that if you didn’t have space, you couldn’t have anything solid.”
Alan Watts · Why Nothing Is the Source of Everything
Thirty spokes share the wheel’s hub;
It is the center hole that makes it useful.
Shape clay into a vessel;
It is the space within that makes it useful.
Cut doors and windows for a room;
It is the holes which make it useful.
Therefore profit comes from what is there;
Usefulness from what is not there.

The room comes first. You cannot have something without nothing. A figure needs its ground; a note needs the silence around it; a house needs the land, the light and the life it will hold. Before we draw, we make room.
Everything is creation. A house, a song, a dinner, an installation that lasts one night. We treat them the same way: we listen, we play, we build.
Listen before drawing. The place already knows what it wants to be. The work is paying attention long enough to hear it.
Play is a method. Trying, getting it wrong, finding something we were not looking for. That part is human and it is not delegated.
Remove what is not needed. Most of the work is taking away. What remains is what resonates.
Precision is given to the machine. It carries the production, the drawings, the renders, the paperwork, so that the time it returns is spent looking and thinking. Not to go faster. To have time.
Each project is a work. It has a title, a date and a number. It is made for one place and one person. It does not repeat.
Architecture, art and music ask the same question. How does it feel to be here.
The door opens. Architects, musicians and makers of tools come in to talk, test and build. Some ideas leave as buildings. Some as music. Some as tools. All of them started the same way: by noticing something and giving it room.

Otras, herramientas. Todas empezaron igual: notando algo y dándole lugar.
